Hurricane Windows or Impact Windows? Same Thing, Different Name
The terms “hurricane windows” and “impact windows” tend to be regarded as different products; however, this could not be further from the truth. Both terms used in both instances refer to laminated impact-resistant glass that is sealed in layers and designed to remain in the frame during a hurricane or for high winds. The Florida building code does not distinguish between both names; after all, it treats both kinds of products alike and requires that glass glazing be certified as passing the same tests of impacts and wind forces.
Where Impact Windows Are Required in Florida
Florida's hurricane exposure isn't evenly distributed, and neither is the code.
- Miami-Dade and Broward County—High Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ). Every exterior opening needs glazing carrying a Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance (NOA), no exceptions.
- Most other coastal and near-coastal counties—Wind-Borne Debris Region. New construction and replacement windows in these areas must meet impact window standards and carry a Florida Product Approval number
- Southwest Florida—Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs. Inside the Wind-Borne Debris Region, and still recovering in places from Hurricane Ian in 2022.
- Tampa Bay. Spared the worst direct hits for years, until the 2024 storm season changed that.
- The Atlantic Coast, Palm Beach to the Space Coast. Full Wind-Borne Debris Region coverage along this corridor as well, with older homes and other housing stock in some pockets still running standard windows that predate current building codes.
